A couple of things we wanted to know: Just how does Pete Souza, official White House photographer, get a shot like the one above? (It’s one of his favorites, by the way.) And how did he get one of the sweetest gigs ever, anyway?
As Souza reveals in a recent fascinating Flickr interview, he tries to stay out of the way, and often finds himself crawling around on the floor in the Oval Office. “The President and staff are used to me being around,” he remarks unassumingly. “And Secret Service agents are always amused by me,” says Souza of his tendency to climb up on ledges to get a great shot.
Souza has open access, is in every meeting, and travels with POTUS, often shooting up to 1100 pictures a day. The result is an unprecedented Presidential photo stream of mostly candid shots, with a new batch posted every couple of weeks. We sure like knowing that at least photography-wise, we’re getting a transparent peek into what our Commander in Chief’s been up to.
