Blurb is in the news. Today’s Boston Herald features an article on the growing trend of self-publishing among established and budding authors. In the last year alone, self-published books numbered 764,448, a 181% increase over 2008, and far more than the 288,355 books produced by traditional publishers. And, Blurb, along with Blurbarians like you, played a big part…to the tune of more than 350,000 unique book titles in 2009.

Read the article. It has some great stats on some of Blurb’s bestsellers and some good insights on how people are using self-publishing to promote their business and their art (the book as business card – great idea).

  1. I’m a big fan of Blurb – I’ve made many books. This blog used to be very inspirational and full of ideas, pictures and interesting stuff. It now seems to be shifting more to “we will be here”, “do this and help us market ourselves” kind of stuff.

    Bring back the inspirational stuff!

  3. Eileen: Maybe pulling one of your user’s experience from the article and placing right in the original blog post above (rather than only referencing) might have satisfied our Max. in other words, a bit of news, a bit of inspiration!

  4. Greg,
Good point. Next time, I’ll try and pull more out of the article. This time around I was trying to keep it short. Ah well, hard to find the right balance sometimes. Anyway, all feedback is good. Keep it coming.

  5. Personally I find the statistics inspiring in themselves, that their are many other people and creatives doing the same route with publishing. In my observation of the world at the momento, it seems to be easier with software and technology to enter the inner sanctum of the artist and make art. Books for me and my dreams with Blurb allow me to write and combine my art with words and get it all into a format ( a book) that is lovely to open and hold and to even have unopened even on the coffee table.
The stats in the post point to a changing world but also confirm my observation that publishing books is the way to go, because not everyone is doing it, yet! There are photographs galore out there, paintings and any number of art media/mediums but books………are not as out there in a world that heads toward computerland reading……..we all still like books to have and to hold. Self publishing is awesome………and the stats inspire me to get those other books in the pipeline out there sooner rather than later.
