This week’s Book of the Week is a deeply moving, visually rich exploration of the responses to the London riots. Simply titled Facebook, it takes as its inspiration the Facebook memorial Wall posts for Mark Duggan, whose shooting death by police sparked the riots.
In the words of Lisa Miller, who wrote and designed the book, the Facebook wall held “reactions to that event and the aftermath; the ensuing violence, the mayhem and anarchy, the anger and hatred, which spread from London across several major cities in the UK.”

Miller’s medium is a montage of pastels, acrylics, and photography. Each two-page spread is devoted to a particular wall post, the words rendered in rubber stamp lettering, notated with the date and time of each post. Taking no side or position, Miller’s work focuses on the most human of reactions in an electrifying mixture of expressionism and 2.0 media.
