We couldn’t help but smile when we spotted this little portfolio from Brian Ajhar, a veteran illustrator whose whimsical work looked awfully familiar… and no wonder: Ajhar’s artwork has graced bestselling children’s books, magazines, and advertising over a three-decade career.

Ajhar created Mugs & Beards specifically for an upcoming event (the CTN Animation Expo, happening in November) as a way to showcase his projects across various media. Taking full advantage of two-page spreads, he places large details from his illustrations opposite smaller reproductions of the full artwork.

And what details! Bearded wizards and quirky creatures leap off the pages with marvelously rendered facial expressions that pull the viewer into the scenes, which always seem just a little bit off-kilter. There’s great color and texture here, too, making each picture a joy to look at.

  1. Fantastic work. So full of life and humour. I love the wizard with the raven on his shoulder looking the splitting image of his master.
