Stephen Johnson dreams big. Himalayas big. He had always wanted to trek there and in 2004, he and his son made the trip. The experience is documented in our Book of the Week, A Nepal Journal.
While the book’s preview includes interesting photos ranging from rebar and religious relics to monkeys and motorbikes, what really drew me in was the introduction.
Matthew Johnson explains how the adventure came to be: Dad turned 60 and decided to give himself a particularly adventurous present. Matthew then writes about landing in Kathmandu, being greeted by a sherpa, seeing ox carcasses, experiencing altitude sickness, and hearing Tibetan hand-cymbals. I’m thinking that a father and son must be pretty close in order to share such an exotic, challenging trip, and I can only imagine the photos, inside jokes, and priceless memories that came out of it. Now I’m daydreaming about the Forbidden Kingdom of Mustang and wondering if my dad would meet me there.
Matthew and Stephen, congratulations on creating such a personal travel journal. We hope it brings you back to your journey in Nepal every time you open it.
