Emo is a way of life the same way that punk, mod, crunk, hyphy, or any other scene is a way of life. If you’re into it, you’re wearing it, listening to it, embodying it, and identifying with it. And if it becomes pervasively trendy – and trust us, Emo has – then does it lose its appeal and integrity? Let’s turn to our Book of the Week and find out.
Written and illustrated by Rob and Maggie Dobi, YOUR SCENE SUCKS, skewers the Emo scene with some pretty potent satire. If you’re familiar with Emo, then this will probably make you laugh. If you are Emo, this will probably piss you off. And if you have no clue what Emo is, then this is your Emo 101 textbook.
We loved the authors’ biting sense of humor and were impressed by Rob’s accompanying illustrations. And we’re not the only ones impressed with his work. Book publishers like Harper Collins and Hyperion have used his illustrations. The music industry is on to him too. (Fall Out Boy was a client.) Check out his Web site to see more of his work.
Your book was highly entertaining, Rob and Maggie. Congratulations on being chosen Book of the Week. We’re keeping an eye out to see what you create next. We get the feeling that no scene is safe, and that’s a good thing.
Speaking of good things, think back to when you were a teen. (If you are a teen, go look in the mirror.) What was going on with your hair? What were you wearing? What was your scene? And, most important, are you willing to show us the pictures? Or, better yet, make a book out of them?
