Normally, during this time of year we start talking about ingredients and recipes for home-baked pies and breads. But today we saw the news that Hostess, the venerable provider of cream-filled, mass-market baked goods, will be shutting down. So instead, we’re featuring photographer Dwight Eschliman‘s book 37 or so Ingredients: The Hostess Twinkie.
Eschliman’s book is simple in concept: isolating and photographing the ingredients in petri dishes. The effect though is much more interesting: The textures and colors are beautiful. The tiny words on the package are suddenly given importance and weight. It’s the deconstruction of commercial food photography and an exploration of the complexity of mass-produced food stuffs. And, given today’s news, it’s also an elegy.
