BookSmart Beta 1.3 released today

The email we sent today to registered Blurbarians says it all:

Fellow Blurbarians,

Thanks for sharing. Seriously. The number one request from our current beta has been to enable more font support for Blurb books. Second request – full bleed dust jackets. Third – better performance, please.

Good news. All that and more is now available in our latest BookSmart™ beta upgrade, 1.3. Here are a few highlights:

- Use any font on your computer
- Full bleed covers
- New, vertical book format – great for more text intensive books
- Four new cookbook themes

In addition to all these new features, we’ve improved the general performance (especially text handling) and fixed a bunch of things along the way. We feel so good about all this that we’ve composed a little haiku to commemorate the occasion:

Cover bleeds to edge
So many typeface choices
Upgrade BookSmart now

Finally, did we mention that you’ll need this latest version for new book orders? If you’ve got a book in the works, no worries. Just download BookSmart to either your Mac or PC, and install on your computer as before. Your book in progress as well as any older books will not be affected in any way. (Note to Mac users: You’ll need to overwrite the old copy of BookSmart.)

We hope you enjoy this new release. And keep those emails and letters coming.

See you in print, soon.

Your friends,

The Blurberati

Today, new BookSmart beta. Tomorrow, a Blurb.com upgrade. We can’t promise this much excitement every week.

Tell us what you think and keep those great suggestions coming. Maybe one of your tips will make it into the next release of BookSmart.

  1. I upgraded yesterday and I am no longer able to work on my book. There seems to be an issue with java using 100% of the CPU.

  1. [...] So there has been some incredible chat recently on Self-Publishing. Read the Blurberati Blog for the skinny on what is going on in the world of innovative self publishing facilitators. Read Wired.com for industry reaction and read Organic Research (2 different posts) for some illuminating consideration. Marginal Revolution is sceptical (like all good economists I say) and finally for something COMPLETELY different. [...]

  2. [...] In the spirit of full disclosure, I should admit that since Eileen is taking the Blurberati out for drinks tonight to celebrate the release of BookSmart 1.3, there’s definitely a warm and fuzzy vibe in the office right about now. But even without the happy hour looming, I’d still have to say that before I worked at Blurb, I often wondered what CEOs did all day. Now I know: Some of them make books professionally and personally, actually answer phones, and sometimes buy their hard-working bookmaking employees a round. Impressive, yes, and highly recommended.
