I’ve been on the back of a friend’s Norton when he put the hammer down. That is a quality rush. I don’t have the chutzpah to get my own bike, but I do appreciate them. Just not as much as the riders at Sturgis. If you find yourself at that rally, then motorcycles are in your blood. (Metaphorically speaking. Hopefully you’ve avoided spills and road rash.)
Over 500,000 people attend the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota’s Black Hills, and thankfully Don Kates is one of them. Without Don we wouldn’t have our Book of the Week, STURGIS! Nothing Like It, A Pictorial of the World’s Greatest Motorcycle Rally. And this is a book you’ve got to see.
Don is a nature, wildlife, wedding, and portrait photographer who, along with his wife, also shoots motorcycles and related events. Here he has compiled a Sturgis photography book that’s huge on character. Bikers might be good fodder for interesting shots, but Don’s work is just as thoughtful and beautiful as it is gritty and cheeky.
If you like Harleys, highways, and chrome, you should check it out. If you appreciate good photography, definitely open the Preview. And if you’re jonesing for a wild ride of your own, why not attend Sturgis yourself. It’s happening this year August 4-10 and it looks like Kid Rock, ZZ Top, and Lynyrd Skynyrd will be performing. Grab your chaps and go.
Don, nice work on your book. We loved it. We also got some great tattoo ideas.
Anyone going to Sturgis this year? Or going back?
