Some Canon camera owners have become hackers in pursuit of their hobbies. Take Pete Lilja in Waterloo, Iowa. He sends his modified camera up in a weather balloon as high as 87,00 feet to get another perspective on the world.
The rig is complex and the shots he gets are only possible due to the Canon Hack Development Kit (C.H.D.K.). The kit, developed by programmers outside of Canon, has allowed users to reprogram Canon cameras to do everything from time-lapse photography of wildlife to creating artistic images in difficult lighting by altering the exposure control.
If you’re looking to alter your Canon camera’s reality (sorry, no such kit for Nikon, Panasonic, or Sony cameras), get the full story in this New York Times article.
