In the ‘70s, you could find the emerging disco culture all over the U.S., but Mendocino, located 150 miles north of San Francisco, had its own distinct Northern California vibe. Mellower and earthier, its alternative scene embraced artisans, musicians, free spirits, and those drawn to the back-to-the-land movement. Many of its residents fled the hippie scene in the Haight Ashbury to take root in the country.
Nick Wilson, the photographer behind the book Mendocino In The Seventies, was there to capture much of it, from the outdoor concerts staged alongside giant Redwoods to the activists behind the first Whale Festival. Hey, thanks for the plug! There are 50 more copies of my book on the way, bringing the total to 425 copies since my December 2007 book release event. Maybe there will be a sequel for next December.
