Just a midweek pick-up to remind us all that great things happen when creativity runs free.
Take a look at South African artist Barbara Wildenboer’s “altered books” project. With her crazy Edward Scissorhands skills, she’s snipped and sculpted books into surprising new dimensions. By the way, if you’re in Capetown, don’t miss her exhibit at the Photographers Gallery from 27 March to 30 April.
On the other side of the world, there’s a great exhibit going on in the San Francisco Bay Area at the Donna Seager Gallery. Called “The Art of the Book,” the exhibit, which runs to 30 April, brings together a diverse group of artists, all of whom reinterpret the medium and offer their own twist on storytelling. For example, Shanna Leino’s “2-part brass book” explores the story of a broken friendship. Each of the two books can be manipulated to turn toward or away from each other.
Bookmaker and artist Daniel Essig pushed the edges of the ancient art of Coptic binding to create his book-cum-sculpture entitled “Totem.” Together, Essig, the other artists featured in this show, and Wildenboer remind us all that books are what you make them.
