George Kerscher, talking about ePub3.

ePub is the reliable “package” for content. It’s based on HTML5, with some pieces of CSS3. This means:

  • Video and audio support, audio can be synchronized with text.
  • Embedded font support a baseline requirement.
  • SVG support (line drawing standard).
  • EPub has rapidly become standard for the industry in North America and Europe.

More awaits the release of the draft tomorrow.

Accessibility features from DAISY (ePubs can be used easily by readers for blind). Libraries around the world make materials available to blind and people with other disability.

Funny episode: the presenter uses a screen reader on his computer (he seems to have sight disability), and as he brings up each slide the screen reader reads the text (so he knows which slide he’s 0n). This irritated some of the audience, and he asked for a headset so that his mic wouldn’t pick up the speech from his computer. He said, “you don’t have to tell me it’s irritating, I have to listen to this s___ all the time.” :)
