You know what? We wanted to get you a little something for all your summer bookmaking plans… Announcing Blurb BookSmart™ beta version 1.8. This latest version delivers some pretty cool new features, such as:
• More color choices for book covers and inside pages.
• A much easier way to make text and style changes throughout your book in areas like the headers and footers where you see your title, chapter names, and page numbers.
• A faster way to move multiple pages from one section of your book to another. This feature also makes it easy to delete lots of pages at once.

  1. I’d really like the layout options of two and three column text over a full page picture – that way I could create my own layouts as a background picture and still have columned text.

    Cheers,

  2. Dana – I’ve passed your suggestions on to the BookSmart design team. Thanks!

  3. I think Blurb Booksmart is the best bookmaking software out there. Still, I can’t help but wonder why there are strange limitations. First, why are we locked on the layouts? Or at the very least, I would like to add or remove elements of a layout, or even move them around?

Aside from my layout gripes, overall, I am liking each new version. Keep up the good work!

  4. I’m excited about Blurb, but I’m disappointed with the design options in Booksmart. The tour makes it look like there are more design options than there are in the app. For example, in the tour there are six themes, but only three in the app. I see a parchment background in the tour that doesn’t exist in the app. There is no support for backgrounds to be patterns or images. There is no support for colored photo borders other than black. The photo page layouts provide too many options for text and not enough for just photos full bleed – only up to four to a page all the same size – boring. Six photos of varying sizes full bleed is pretty essential. For now I have to stick with Apple books.

  5. I would love for some of the layout options to be available in “mirror” image. Right now, certain options, particularly for photo books, make little sense depending on whether the page is an odd or even page. if the same options were available as “mirrors”, pictures would be clipped less often, with a possibility of placing text on the inside no matter whether an odd or even page.

    but it’s still pretty cool!

  6. A few items I would like are:

    1. Being able to set default font and size for header, footer and text items. Even if you change the page number font for example, once you create a new page it reverts the the default for the theme. You can change them all later, but if you add one page and forget, you might miss it.

    2. Being able to have small white space between photos on the “non-border” page picture layouts. The June newsletter email I got, there is a picture of what I’m looking for but I haven’t found a theme that does this or I somehow missed an option to include some space between pictures where the page background shows through and visually separates the photos a bit more. Maybe it’s in the wedding theme, but I have not looked at all of them yet I’ll admit.

    3. I was going to complain about trying to translate pictures only up/down or left/right but I found I can do that with the mouse keys, although responsiveness is bit unpredictable.

    4. Customizable layouts of course would be great, but may be challenging for you. Anyway, the more photo layout possibilities the better in my view.

    5. It’s a little crash-happy on my Mac, but hey, it’s beta, and usually with the auto-save it doesn’t lose much if anything.

Anyway, I’ve already ordered one book and am preparing another for some friends who will no doubt be blown away, so thanks!

  7. Just downloaded 1.8.1 but cannot find any clues as to the implementation of the new features! What’s the “easier way to make text and style changes” and the “faster way to move multiple pages”? You’ve hidden them well, and there is nothing at all in the help pages. Can we have a clue, please?

I do love the new ability to customize the cover color–that’s something I’ve wanted for a long time. Finally, I can have a white cover background!

    Thanks!

  8. Hi Barb – Sounds like you are new to Blurb. We’ve actually gotten some great feedback on our design options in BookSmart – we add more layouts with every release. You’ll find the parchment background in the Standard Landscape book option under the Themes dropdown (Travel, Signature, Platinum). And yes, colored photo borders are coming in a later release.

Also, each template has more than four-up layouts per page. If you scroll further down the page list, you’ll discover more options. You can also easily adjust how your images fit the page or container.

    Have fun!

  9. The one feature I would like is for an option to easily place 2 sets of text at the left and right ends of the header and footer.
For ex. Chapter name at the left corner and sub section name in the right corner.

Currently all of the text aligns either left or right. And we have to hit space repeatedly to move the text. Also tab doesn’t work in the headers and footers to leave tab spaces so it needs to be done one at a time and it is a very time consuming process.

  10. Maybe I’m missing this, but I don’t see a way to justify text (so it is flush with both the left and right sides of the text block). Is there a way to do this?

  11. On the new version, I made a portrair book, but when I tried to export it as a PDF to print all the pictures went wrong. Not aligned, nor croped as I can see then on the screen.
    I´m DESPERATE!!!
    Any solution?
I MADE al the pictures match the suggested container size in photoshop. PLUS Booksmart did NOT alert me of any problem.
    Whar can I do?

  13. Maybe I am missing this, but I would like to know what color I used in a background later on. I make one page a certain color, then I save and come back to it later. When I want to make another page with the same color background later on, I cannot find the same color on the palette easily. Even if I go back to the original page, it doesn’t show that color. Any ideas?

  14. Hi, I’m working with some two page full pics and wondering if on new softfware release will be something to correct the bleed missing portion of the image. On the imagewarp covers you loose some part of the picture (signed on the bleed) so I’m avoiding it repeating a part of the image on the second page. that’s good so once published the book will be good compensating the lost part of the image on the book cover legature. I’m thinking about an option that hides the bleeds on the on-line preview cause if you look at a book made in such way you see the two page picture not aligned and is not so nice to see.
