We’re starting the weekend off on a high note. PC Magazine reviewed BookSmart, and we earned the coveted 4 Stars rating. This is our first “official” product review (after all we’re still in beta), and it’s always a little scary to turn your baby over to someone whose primary goal is basically to beat it up and figure out what’s wrong.

BookSmart more than held its own under the scrutiny: “BookSmart impressively accommodates both casual and intricate usage. It’s sophisticated enough to do most of the work for you but loaded with enough options to let you dig in and customize every detail…it’s efficient, simple to use, yet gives you a lot of options to play around with—perfect for those who like to let their creativity shine.

We do our best to make a killer product, and it’s cool to see the folks at PC Mag react in such a positive way.

  1. Well done Blurb! I for one am extremely pleased with your books. The colours are great and the page quality superb. For the price you guys charge its pretty hard to beat! The last big software upgrade has made a big difference to the manageabilty of a karge file. And let me confess a secret – tested for idiot-proofness. I ‘accidentally’ deleted a bookful of photo files, and had a book full of grey squares instead. Restoring the files from my backup worked a treat and all was well. PHEW!!!! I did have the originals and also a printed proof to work from to redo it, but gladly it did not come to that.

    Keep up the good work!

  2. 4 Stars? You guys need FIVE stars. My books came in and both the hardcover and the imagewrap were awesome! Did the reviewer review the new imagewrap?

  5. Yep, I must add my congratulations to those already posted. This is a wonderful site and the products are excellent.

Sometimes I just surf through the bookstore “Window-shopping”. It is amazing what people can do with a little help from a company like Blurb.

    Thanks again – Ben O.

  6. Next year it will be five stars….if the product is a little more flexible by then. The boxes should be adjustable and then it would be perfect, because the vibrance is good and the delivery towards the Netherlands is only a couple of days.

  7. Congrats! Glad to see that you’re getting good feedback.

Do you have a timetable for when BookSmart — in particular the Mac version — will be out of beta? I see that the version number is approaching 2, but it sounds like it’s still considered beta. My guess is that other publications will review this software once it is out of beta.

Thanks in advance for the info!

  9. I guess the reviewer wasn’t making a book from Typepad which hasn’t been working forever.

  10. I uploaded my first book on Blurb last week. A family project with 115 pages and 320 photos. The BookSmart application OK, but I’m looking for much improvement there. The recent blog post with lots of tips was useful, but I’d already finished all the work.

But the reason I’m commenting is to offer feedback on a customer service issue. I ordered a book on July 4th and realized later that same day there was an error in the mailing address. Fortunately someone agreed to chance it for me “just this once”.

Your help page says “Our production process is highly automated and your order information travels with the book as it’s being created.”

I’d say Amazon.com’s order process is also highly automated and I can place an order and change the shipping address the day before the book is shipped and it works just fine.

Anything that’s “highly automated” CAN be fixed to accommodate a simple request like this. I was shocked to find that this was a special request, especially when the book was not due to be shipped for 5 days and in this case was going overseas.

Can I suggest making this process change a priority?

  11. Congratulations! You folks deserve it. Great work! I am thrilled with all three books I’ve done and the extra copies that were ordered and given to family. Friends are now requesting books to be done for them. Thanks so much!

  12. I love Blurb. So far have created four books and working on my fifth. However could use some different templates. All are square or rectangular. How about some round or oval .

  14. Many congrats, Blurb. You guys are awesome. Just completed my 3rd book, a family special for my Dad’s 70th birthday. It was stuffed full of pics of his grandchildren and bought him to tears – this doesn’t happen often. Keep up the good work.

  15. Congrats guys! I don’t know about customizable down to every detail though… unless you allow PDF upload which would allow users to fully customize their books to their liking. I am very eager for that.
