Blurbarians, we’re reaching out to you because one of our bookmakers so kindly reached out to us.
Hillary Prag, a photojournalist and teacher who has been living in Port-au-Prince, Haiti for the past year and a half has offered to donate $10 to the relief efforts in Haiti from her Blurb book sales.
Her book, Ansanm, was originally made to showcase the work of at-risk teens who participated in Hillary’s photojournalism class. The students’ photos highlight their view of the hidden and most beautiful corners of Haiti – a country that’s now tragically changed. Buying the book will not only give these kids proof that their work matters, it will also help rebuild the country.
Hillary has designated the Mennonite Central Committee, a non-profit organization, as the recipient of any funds that she collects by selling her book. She’s assured us that this non-profit supports Haitians directly, so you can be sure the money will go directly to the cause and not to bureaucratic overhead.
When Hillary covered stories of the Haitian hurricane survivors from the 2008 storms that ravaged the country, she says she was struck by how quickly Haitians were to degaje, which is Creole for “make do with what you have.” This time what they have is even less.
Please take a look at the book and help Hillary. Even if you don’t buy the book, please do something. We’re all in this together. For a good round-up of relief efforts and links to agencies where you can also donate, check out this blog post from Huffington Post. Thanks.
