While everyone can write a sentence and snap a photo, doing these things well takes practice. Getting advice from a pro doesn’t hurt, either. My favorite place for tips on taking better photos is the Digital Photography School’s blog. They pick timely topics to write about, like photographing fireworks just in time for the 4th of July, as well as more geeky stuff, such as getting better images using your camera phone. If you’re making a book that has photography in it, their post “Telling Stories With Photos” is a must-read. In it they provide clear, basic guidelines for telling stories with one image or several that, I’ve found, are really helpful to follow when laying out photos in Blurb’s BookSmart. I still have a long way to go before I can even consider myself a decent photographer, but I’m amazed at how much just a little good advice has helped.
